Climate Tech - Bioplastics
Showing how seaweed
becomes plastic — without
giving away the recipe.
FlexSea turns seaweed biomass into compostable bioplastic pellets. They needed a film that explained the process to investors and partners while keeping the proprietary chemistry hidden. We built them a world for it.

the brief
A process worth
protecting.
FlexSea develops sustainable processes that convert seaweed biomass into compostable bioplastics — a genuinely novel piece of climate tech. They came to us needing a way to explain that process to investors, partners and their own team, without showing the proprietary chemistry that makes it work.
The brief was specific: visualise the journey from raw seaweed to thermoplastic pellet in enough technical detail to feel credible, while keeping the actual mechanism deliberately abstracted. The result needed to sit naturally alongside FlexSea's existing brand, and flex across formats — from a hero film to standalone stills for LinkedIn and pitch decks.
the solution
One gradient world,
four real stages.
Rather than render FlexSea's actual reactors and equipment, we distilled their early sketches into what we called a "gradient world" — a refined, abstract 3D environment built entirely from colour and light. It let us show what happens at each stage without showing how.
stage 01
Harvest
Raw seaweed biomass enters the world as soft, organic forms — establishing the natural origin of the material.
stage 02
Breakdown
Forms dissolve and reform through abstract gradient transitions — implying process without depicting the proprietary chemistry.
stage 03
Formation
Material consolidates into the recognisable pellet form, the gradient sharpening from organic to refined and product-like.
stage 04
Application
Finished thermoplastic pellets are shown in product context — closing the loop from ocean to usable material.
A cohesive visual language that felt both scientific and premium.

pre production
Locking the story before the render.
A full animatic let FlexSea's team sign off on pacing and narrative structure early — long before expensive high-fidelity rendering began. Every beat of the production flow was agreed in advance.

"The final animation not only clearly illustrates our process but also aligns perfectly with our company's brand. Chris brought a lot of enthusiasm and took the time to fully understand our process — working with him was a fun, easy and rewarding experience."
